Guide and Protect the Public
When Do You Really Need Crowd Control?
Think of the many reasons why crowds form.
Maybe it’s the book signing at t he local book store, sales from your favorite retailers, school events, sports events, old car shows and on and on. These crowds are usually together for a positive reason.
On the other hand, crowds can form for other reasons like accidents and protests.
And crowd control methods vary by situation.
There are the standard methods you have all seen used, like stanchions, barriers, ropes, and posts to more heavy-duty controls like batons, bean bags, shields, rubber bullets, water cannons and other non-lethal weapons.
Stanchions are made with or without attached ropes or restraints called belts, to keep crowds localized to an area or which direct crowd movement in an orderly fashion. Some even have retractable restraints. They are often used by banks, theaters, hotels, retail stores, airports, convention centers, restaurants, bars, amusement parks, office building lobbies, supermarkets, stadiums, schools, and churches.
There are also some newer technologies which employ sounds, shocks and odors (stinky) to disperse or incapacitate crowds if they get out of hand. These types of non-lethal weapons are referred to as NLWs.
The military has used Long Range Acoustic Devices, known as LRADs which make a deafening screeching noise, like a fire alarm. This sound can incapacitate anyone within 300 meters by causing an instant headache. They also have a microwave technology that can incapacitate crowds by using microwaves which rapidly heat the water molecules in the person’s skin and cause a burning sensation on the skin.
