Animal Repellents
While in Bear Country:
BE ALERT to your surroundings and prepared to
defend yourself. It's a good idea to get a
spray which is registered with the EPA for use against bears, as there is a special
formula that works better on them. Ordinary pepper sprays are not
recommended for use on bears.
For Dogs:
Most dogs are friendly and will be
your buddy, but there are always a few you may not want to get too close to you. Ask
your mail carrier, delivery man, or a jogger. For those times, you'll be
well prepared by having some type of animal repellent.
One thing to remember
for both bears and dogs - Repellents are defense sprays; they do not injure or
poison the animal.
We can now mail animal repellents to
49 states including Michigan, Wisconsin and New York. Sorry, we cannot mail
any pepper orders to Massachusetts or out of the USA.
Here's what the Sierra Club would like: For
the Forest Service to require everyone going into grizzly bear country in a
national forest to carry a bear spray. Their spokeswoman, Heidi Godwin,
had this to say in a recent news release, "The proper use of bear pepper spray
will reduce human injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly bears
killed in self defense, and help promote the recovery and survival of the
grizzly bear."
While we may or may not be in favor of making new laws, it does make a
point in showing how effective bear spray is against bear attacks, without
permanently injuring the animal.
